Parish hosts Indigenous cultural competency training
Grace Church, Markham, 19 Parkway Ave., is hosting a day of Indigenous cultural competency training on May 6 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., presented by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres. The training focuses on strengthening professional relationships between urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and clients with trust, friendship and mutual respect. Participants will build a shared understanding of contemporary priorities, the concept of allied relationships, Indigenous holistic healing, and the importance of infusing Indigenous cultural competencies throughout organizational practices through meaningful engagement with the Indigenous community. Church administrators invited to retreat day
A retreat day for people who work in office administrative capacities in places and organizations of worship will be held on June 2 at St. John’s Convent, 233 Cummer Ave., Toronto. Registration and gathering begin at 9 a.m. The day is open to all denominations, so tell your colleagues; most organizations allow for professional development days. The cost is $60, which includes facilities, a facilitator, lunch and coffee breaks. Youth event explores Indigenous water and treaty rights
Youth age 13-18 and their leaders are invited to Interface, an interactive workshop meant to empower youth to live out their faith in their communities. This free event will take place on April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John, York Mills, 19 Don Ridge Dr., Toronto. Snacks will be provided, but bring a brown bag lunch. Youth leaders are asked to register online with an estimate of how many youth they will be bringing.
Bishop’s Company Dinner early-bird discount ends today
Tickets are on sale for the Bishop’s Company 56th Annual Dinner on May 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Michael Coren, author, radio personality and columnist, will share his journey to the Anglican Church and what it means for him to be Anglican. This year, the reception and dinner will both be hosted at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel. Buy tickets online before April 18 to get the early-bird discount. Those who wish to sit with their parish or a particular guest can indicate so on the registration form.
Silent auction items with a market value of approximately $20, $40 or $100 are also needed. To receive a charitable tax receipt for donated items, proof of market value must be included with the item. ACW hosts 50th anniversary celebration
The diocesan Anglican Church Women will be holding its annual general meeting, luncheon and 50th anniversary celebration on May 13 at Christ Church Stouffville, 254 Sunset Blvd., Stouffville. The theme will be “Moving Forward in Faith,” featuring guest speaker Jane Philpott, Canada’s minister of health, who has had an extensive career in family medicine, public health, medical education and global advocacy on HIV/AIDS. The day will include a Eucharist, lay anointing, lunch, speakers on social justice concerns and Indigenous reconciliation, and entertainment by Sister Act. Godly Play workshop offers training
A workshop offering Godly Play core training will be held April 27-29 at St. George on-the-Hill, 4600 Dundas St. W., Toronto. A Godly Play Canada certificate of accreditation will be awarded upon completion. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. Prior experience is helpful but not necessary. Parish hosts forgiveness seminar
Holy Trinity, Guildwood is hosting “The Freedom of Forgiveness,” a seminar exploring how to forgive and live with peace, love and compassion. It will be led by the Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle, a priest, executive coach and psychologist. The session will take place on April 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity, Guildwood, 85 Livingston Rd., Toronto. Events celebrate gift of water
The Niigaani-gichigami collective, Biidaaban at 40 Oaks, Toronto Urban Native Ministry and St. James Cathedral are organizing a series of events in May related to thanksgiving for and protection of the gift of water. On May 4 at 7 p.m. at the St. James Cathedral Centre, PWRDF will welcome Dean Owens, chief of Pikangikum, for a symposium on the Living Waters Project and how they are working together to respond to the crisis of clean drinking water on Pikangikum First Nation.
On May 6, there will be a gratitude walk and festival to express gratitude and learn about Niigaani-gichigami (Lake Ontario), beginning at 10 a.m. with a Water Ceremony at Sherbourne Street at the waterfront and followed by a community barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in St. James Park., with live music, Halal food, artistic activities for all ages and more. Lay anointers invited to refresher day
All lay anointers are encouraged to attend the annual Lay Anointers’ Refresher Day on April 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trinity Church, Aurora. The speaker will be Dr. Shelley Tidy, pastoral care associate at St. Paul, Bloor Street. The cost is $20, payable at the door. Space is limited, and registration closes on April 23. Parish hosts active non-violence training
St. Stephen in-the-Fields, 103 Bellevue Ave., Toronto, is hosting a day of active non-violence training on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be of interest both to those with a principled commitment to non-violence and those who see it as a positive strategy. Topics will include our understanding of the term “nonviolence,” how we process anger and fear, and how to engage constructively in highly charged situations. The event is free, but advance registration would be appreciated, and donations toward lunch are welcome. Contact the Rev. Clergy invited to digital communications workshop
The Diocese of Huron is inviting clergy from our Diocese to “Telling our story: Communication in a Digital Age” from April 30 to May 2 at Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre. Workshops will be led by the Rev. Marty Levesque, diocesan social media officer, and Davor Milicevic, diocesan communications coordinator. Areas of focus include the contemporary nature of Christian message, social media as agora, missional listening and market research, technical aspects of social media, personal branding, event planning and communications planning. Marathon to close streets
The annual GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, May 7 and will result in street closures. Marathon and 10K races begin at 7:30 a.m. and the half marathon begins at 8:30 a.m. Police will be at major intersections to direct traffic, but drivers should expect some delays. Each year, the Creation Matters Committee produces resources for Earth Sunday, including notes on the lectionary readings aimed at those preparing sermons, as well as a bulletin insert with reflection and action ideas. Young women invited to spend a year in God’s rhythm
The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine is accepting applications for the 2017-18 cohort of its Companions on an Ancient Path program. Women age 22 to 40 are invited to explore an expression of new monasticism rooted in the Anglican tradition while living at St. John’s Convent. The application deadline is June 15.
