T1213 packages mailed for 2019
The 2019 T1213 Package for clergy receiving a housing allowance was mailed out on Aug. 23. (Clergy living in a rectory do not need to apply for this.) Clergy receiving a housing allowance who would like to have a reduction in withholding taxes at source must file form T1213 and receive written approval from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). The diocesan payroll office must receive this approval by Jan. 18, 2019, or your housing allowance will be treated as a taxable benefit. Submit the paperwork by Sept. 15, as the CRA has advised that processing times will be 16-20 weeks. Contact the CRA if you have not received your approval by the middle of December. If you receive a paid housing allowance but did not receive a package, contact Claire Wilton at 416-363-6021 (1-800-668-8932) ext. 239 or cwilton@toronto.anglican.ca. If you do not wish to have the reduction in withholding taxes at source, you do not need to submit this paperwork to the CRA.
Clergy reminded to register for sexual misconduct policy training
The diocesan Sexual Misconduct Policy requires that all active clergy attend training every three years. Active clergy refers to incumbents, priests-in-charge, interim priests-in-charge, associate priests and assistant curates. It is mandatory that all active clergy attend one of these sessions. Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m., and you must be present for the whole time. If you are unable to attend, speak directly with your area bishop.

All invited to consecration
The Very Rev. Andrew Asbil, Coadjutor Bishop-elect, will be ordained bishop on Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto. All are welcome to attend. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and the congregation should be seated by 10:15 a.m. The service will also be live streamed through the diocesan Facebook page. Clergy are invited to vest and process; the stole colour will be white. Register online.
Anyone wishing to make a donation toward the cost of vestments for Bishop-elect Asbil can visit the donation page and use the drop-down list to designate their gift.
Episcopal areas host mental health symposiums
York-Credit Valley and Trent Durham are each hosting a mental health awareness symposium to help clergy and pastoral care visitors feel more comfortable in ministering to people with mental health concerns. The presenter will be the Rev. Donald Shields. The dates are:

This year’s dinner hosted by the Canadian Friends to West Indian Christians is scheduled for Nov. 3 at St. Andrew, Scarborough, 2333 Victoria Ave., Toronto. The Eucharist will start at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Archbishop Colin Johnson. Tickets are $60. Youth retreat focuses on “home”
ReCharge, the annual diocesan youth retreat, is scheduled for Sept. 21-23 at Muskoka Woods. It will include music, inspiring worship, speakers and friendship in the great outdoors. The theme this year is “home,” with conversations about feeling at home in your relationship with God and what it feels like to have a home in your community. The cost is $105. Parish nurse event builds diocesan network
Are you a parish nurse? Does your congregation have a healing ministry? The diocesan network of parish nurses, in partnership with St. James Cathedral, invites you to a time of fellowship and reflection on Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto. Participants will be encouraged to share the wisdom and experience of their healing ministries, with the goal of building an informal network where skills development and learning activities can be planned. Register now for evangelism conference
Discipulus’18, a new national conference, will take place Oct. 18-19 at St. Paul, Bloor Street, 227 Bloor St. E., Toronto. Sponsored by the Diocese and the Institute of Evangelism, it will focus on how churches can make disciples in their own communities who will be energized to share their faith with others. In addition to a keynote speaker, there will be workshops on strategies, tools and resources for evangelism and disciple-making. The cost is $250 per person. Mark your calendars for the Bishop’s Company 57th Annual Dinner on Oct. 19 as we celebrate the ministry of Archbishop Colin Johnson. A discussion with the Archbishop will be moderated by Judy Maddren, formerly of CBC Radio’s World Report. The reception and dinner will take place at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Hotel from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available online. The event is expected to sell out, so book soon.

Registration open for outreach conference
The annual Outreach and Advocacy Conference will take place on Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Havergal College, 1451 Avenue Rd., Toronto. This is an excellent opportunity for learning, sharing and networking among clergy and laypeople passionate about outreach, social justice and creation care. André Lyn, a researcher and advocate on issues of homelessness, poverty and racism, will give the keynote address. Participants can choose from 10 workshops to deepen their understanding of and capacity to address a variety of justice issues. The cost is $30 ($15 for students and low-income participants). Christians to connect online on Social Media Sunday
The 2018 edition of Social Media Sunday is scheduled for Sept. 30. This annual event is a day to show the power of social media to help Christians around the world be and do church online and in between times of formal worship. Parishes and individuals are encouraged to participate in ways that make sense for them, such as live-tweeting the sermon, inviting friends to church online, checking in at church on Facebook, or sharing a photo or video, all using the hashtag #SMS18. Interested in improving your parish’s energy conservation but don’t know where to start? Between Sept. 1 and Oct. 4, Christians of many denominations around the world will celebrate the Season of Creation. The Creation Matters Working Group of the Anglican Church of Canada has gathered resources suitable for use in Anglican parishes.
Cathedral offers grief recovery support group
St. James Cathedral is offering an eight-week grief recovery support group open to members from any parish beginning Sept. 16. This group is intended to help those for whom the first stages of shock and loss have passed and who are trying to figure out how to integrate the changes the experience has brought to their lives. Church launches language café
Grace Church in Scarborough, 700 Kennedy Rd., Toronto, is launching a language café to increase multicultural communication in a light-hearted way. Starting in October, each month will focus on a different language. Sessions will take place on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. Older youth and adults of any age are welcome. The program will be loosely structured, can be a drop-in experience and requires the ability to use a free app or website for language learning.
