Jack Layton advocated for social justice: bishops

It is with sadness that we learned today of the passing of Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party and Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. As a member of Toronto City Council and a Member of Parliament, Mr. Layton advocated for social justice and worked to improve the lives of the unemployed, the under-employed, the homeless — indeed, the very men and women God charged us to care for specially. He helped to secure benefits for the unemployed and increase government funding for social services. He treated others with decency and respect, regardless of political stripe or background.

We pray that nothing good in Mr. Layton’s life will be lost, but will be of benefit to the world; that all that was important to him will be respected by those who follow. We also pray for him, his family and friends.

Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
