Archbishop writes letter to vestries for 2017
Archbishop Colin Johnson has written a letter to be read or circulated on the Sunday of a parish’s annual vestry meeting. Read the letter online or download a PDF version.

Parishes reminded of screening requirements for high-risk ministry positions
As annual vestry meetings approach, incumbents and churchwardens are asked to ensure that individuals nominated for election to high-risk ministry positions (particularly churchwarden) are aware of the screening requirements under the Responsible Ministry: Screening in Faith policy.

It is important to be upfront with these requirements so individuals can make informed choices about how they would like to offer their gifts. Remind those nominated for high-risk ministry positions that they will be required to participate in the screening process before they begin their new ministry. There are 11 items that must be completed for high-risk positions, including:

Save the date: Parish leadership workshops
Parish leadership workshops are being planned for each episcopal area. All clergy and parish leaders (churchwardens, treasurers, etc.) are strongly encouraged to attend. Topics include insurance (and risk mitigation), real property management, parish finances and human resources. The dates for this year’s workshops are:

  • York-Credit Valley: March 11
  • York-Simcoe: March 11
  • York-Scarborough: April 1
  • Trent-Durham: April 1

Registration open for social justice vestry motion workshops
The social justice vestry motion for 2017 will once again focus on implementing the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Parishes will be encouraged to advocate for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly the requirement for free, prior and informed consent related to the lands and resources of Indigenous peoples. The motion and some supplementary resources are available on the Vestry Motion page. There are two half-day training and formation sessions left:

  • York-Credit Valley: Jan. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Matthew, Islington. Register online.
  • Trent-Durham: Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Saviour, Orono. Register online.

Diocesan Events

All invited to annual Black History service
The Diocese’s 22nd annual Black History Month service of celebration will take place on Feb. 26 at St. Paul, Bloor Street, with special music beginning at 4 p.m. The theme for this year is “From the Heart of Africa to the Soul of the Caribbean: Celebrating a Mosaic of Peoples.” The service will be filled with worship, music, dance, spoken word and a special acknowledgement of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations. Anglican Church Women plan anniversary celebration

Local ecumenical service celebrates Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
An ecumenical service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be held on Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica, 65 Bond. St., Toronto. It will be led by religious leaders from the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Chaldean Catholic and Coptic Orthodox churches, accompanied by other city-wide religious leaders. Ministry seeks volunteer bookkeeper
Toronto Urban Native Ministry (TUNM), a FaithWorks ministry, is seeking a volunteer bookkeeper to help its leadership prepare the budget and financial reports, maintain the accounts of receipts and disbursements, and prepare payment for TUNM’s one paid staff person. The commitment is typically 8-10 hours each month. Organist and choir director wanted
St. Paul the Apostle, Rexdale is seeking a part-time organist and director of music to lead Sunday worship and music ministry and to lead the parish choir in a wide repertoire of hymns, service music and anthems. The successful applicant will enjoy teaching and help develop the musical skills of the choir in a positive and encouraging environment. The organ is a two-manual electronic Allen organ. The commitment will require slightly more hours at Christmas and Easter and fewer hours through the summer months. Availability to play at weddings and funerals would be an asset. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications according to RCCO guidelines. If the successful candidate is able to lead a steel pan music ministry, additional paid hours would be available, though this experience is not necessary. Church seeks music director
Christ Church, Woodbridge is seeking an organist and choir director to work with an adult SATB choir. Familiarity with liturgical worship music and a broad spectrum of contemporary musical expressions of worship in an asset, along with a willingness to work with children and youth to develop musical programs. Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications according to RCCO guidelines. The position entails about 6 hours per week, including rehearsals and Sunday services, along with availability for additional church services and regular meetings with the rector for musical selection.
