Don’t miss an issue
The Anglican and the Anglican Journal are updating their subscription list. If you wish to continue to receive the newspapers, here are four ways to do so:
- Go to anglicanjournal.com/yes and fill out the form.
- Email yes@national.anglican.ca with your name, address, phone number and ID number.
- Phone 1-866-333-0959.
- Fill out the notice in The Anglican or Anglican Journal and mail it to Anglican Journal, 80 Hayden St., Toronto, ON, M4Y 3G2.
If you do not choose one of these options, your subscription to both papers will end with the June 2019 issue. The Anglican and Anglican Journal will continue to be posted online each month. Please share this information with your congregations.
Churches reminded of screening requirements
As parishes hold their annual vestry meetings, incumbents and churchwardens are asked to ensure that individuals nominated for election to high-risk ministry positions (particularly churchwarden) are aware of the screening requirements under the Responsible Ministry: Screening in Faith policy. Save the date: Clergy Conference
The diocesan Clergy Conference will be held from May 27-29 at Brock University, with Bishop Michael Curry as a keynote speaker. Registration will open on March 4. More information will be announced at the Clergy Pre-Lenten Day on Feb. 26.
Service celebrates black heritage
The Black Anglicans Coordinating Committee invites everyone to the 24th annual diocesan Black History service on Feb. 24 at St. Paul, Bloor Street. This year’s theme is “Journey into Light: Giving Thanks for our Ordained Ministers.” The preacher will be the Rev. Ian LaFleur. Music starts at 4 p.m., and the service starts at 4:30 p.m. To learn more, download the flyer.
Last chance to register for clergy pre-Lenten day
Clergy are invited to a day of fellowship and learning in preparation for Lent with special guest Brother James Koester, SSJE. It will take place on Feb. 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. John, York Mills. Register online by Feb. 19. The event will also be live streamed through the Diocese’s YouTube channel.
Parish leaders invited to workshops
Every year, the Diocese holds parish leadership workshops in each episcopal area shortly after vestry season. All parish leaders, especially those who are new to their positions, are strongly encouraged to attend. The dates are:
- York-Scarborough: March 23 (morning)
- Trent-Durham: March 23 (afternoon)
- York-Simcoe: April 6 (morning)
- York-Credit Valley: April 6 (afternoon)
Times, locations and meeting materials will be posted on the Parish Leadership Workshops page as they become available.
Area clergy invited to Lenten retreat
The York-Credit Valley Clergy Lenten Retreat will take place on April 4 at St. John’s Convent. It will be led by Sister Constance Joanna Gefvert, SSJD, who will draw on her love of scripture and art in leading participants to reflect anew on the journey of Holy Week. The program is open to all active clergy in York-Credit Valley. Space is limited to 40 clerics, and registration is required. Register online by March 14.
Date set for cricket festival
This year’s Anglican Church Cricket Festival is scheduled for June 15 at Creditview Sandalwood Park in Brampton. Anglicans across the diocese are invited to join the 11 churches already planning to participate. For more information, contact Ranil Mendis at rmendis1@gmail.com.
Parish hosts book launch
St. Matthew, Islington is hosting a book launch party for Three Score Ten: Reflections on Aging and the End of Life by the Rev. Dr. Merv Mercer. Featuring reflections and selected readings by the author, it will take place on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. Admission is $5, and books will be available for $20. RSVP to itsshantellehampton@gmail.com.
Registration open for lay anointers training weekend
The annual lay anointers training weekend will take place from May 24-26 at St. John’s Convent. This event is for individuals recommended by their clergy to be trained and equipped for lay anointing in the parish. Supervising clergy will attend for two hours on Saturday. Service recognizes churchwardens’ ministry
The York-Credit Valley churchwardens’ commissioning service will take place on March 31 at 4 p.m. at All Saints, Kingsway. Clergy, churchwardens and guests should register online by March 22.

Parish nurses invited to education day
The Canadian Association for Parish Nursing Ministry is holding a church health education day open to all nurses, health care providers, faith leaders and anyone interested in faith community health. It will take place on May 24 from 1-5 p.m. at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre in London, Ont. For more details, see the poster. Campaign advocates for reducing emissions
Citizens for Public Justice is launching its third annual Give It Up for the Earth! postcard campaign this Lent. Individuals pledge to reduce their personal carbon footprint while calling on the federal government to end public financing of the fossil fuel sector and invest in renewable energy and skills development. New Gathering Rites approved
Bishop Asbil has approved for trial use in the Diocese additional Gathering Rites for celebrations of the Eucharist. These rites have been prepared by the Liturgy Task Force of General Synod for the Paschal Cycle (Lent and Easter). They can be accessed on the national church’s website. The task force asks those who use these texts to complete an evaluation form at the end of the Lent and Easter seasons.
Reach Grants support missional ministry
Is the spirit of God prompting you to try a new ministry idea to reach those not currently served by traditional church? Do you have the time, the people and the vision but need some help with resources? Let us help you achieve that missional vision with a Reach Grant. Cottages on Lake Simcoe available to clergy
Anglican clergy (licensed priests and deacons) and their families are invited to rent cottages at a reasonable cost at the Church Camp on Lake Simcoe in July and August. Two- and three-bedroom cottages are fully equipped except for bedding and towels. Rental costs are $1,006 for a month, $610 for two weeks or $356 for one week. Request a rental online. Our Saviour, Don Mills is seeking a Sunday School teacher.
