Registration open for Synod
Registration is open for the 158th Regular Session of Synod, scheduled for Nov. 9-10 at the Sheraton Parkway-Toronto North Hotel & Suites, 9005 Leslie St., Richmond Hill. For more information, including details about pre-synod meetings, visit the 2018 Regular Synod page.
All invited to consecration
The Very Rev. Andrew Asbil will be ordained bishop on Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto. All are welcome to attend. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and the congregation should be seated by 10:15 a.m. Clergy are invited to vest and process; the stole colour will be white. Register online. The service will also be live streamed through the diocesan Facebook page, and a link to the video will be posted on the home page of the diocesan website. Anyone wishing to make a donation toward the cost of vestments for Bishop-elect Asbil can visit the donation page and use the drop-down list to designate their gift.
Lay anointers invited to refresher day
The next refresher day for licensed lay anointers will be held on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trinity Church, Aurora. It will include training, worship, social time, workshops and two addresses by guest speaker the Rev. Canon Dr. David Neelands. The cost is $25. Youth event explores homelessness
Interface, the annual social justice event from the Archbishop’s Youth Ministry Committee, is coming up on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Clement, Eglinton, 70 St. Clements Ave., Toronto. Open to youth age 13-18 and their leaders from all episcopal areas, Interface is an interactive day of empowering youth to live out their faith in their communities. Area holds Christian basics course
Bishop Jenny Andison will lead a Christian basics course on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14 at St. Joseph of Nazareth, 290 Balmoral Dr., Brampton. The evenings are designed for anyone who is spiritually searching or who wants to explore who Jesus was and is. Register online.
Tickets available for annual Caribbean dinner
This year’s Bishops Arthur Brown and Basil Tonks dinner is scheduled for Nov. 3 at St. Andrew, Scarborough, 2333 Victoria Ave., Toronto. The Eucharist will start at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Archbishop Colin Johnson. Tickets are $60. Parish nurse event builds diocesan network
Are you a parish nurse? Does your congregation have a healing ministry? The diocesan network of parish nurses and St. James Cathedral are hosting a time of fellowship and reflection on Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto. Participants will be encouraged to share their wisdom and experience, with the goal of building an informal network. Save the date: lay anointers training weekend
The annual lay anointers training weekend will take place from May 24-26 at St. John’s Convent. This event is for individuals recommended by their clergy to be trained and equipped for lay anointing in the parish. Supervising clergy will be asked to attend a two-hour session on the Saturday afternoon. Online registration will open in February. For updates, check the Lay Anointers page. Tickets on sale for Bishop’s Company Dinner
The Bishop’s Company 57th Annual Dinner on Oct. 19 will celebrate the ministry of Archbishop Colin Johnson. A discussion with the Archbishop will be moderated by Judy Maddren, formerly of CBC Radio’s World Report. The reception and dinner will take place at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Hotel from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available online. The early-bird rate ends on Sept. 21. Episcopal areas host mental health symposiums
York-Credit Valley and Trent-Durham are each hosting a mental health awareness symposium to help clergy and pastoral care visitors feel more comfortable and competent in ministering to people with mental health concerns. The presenter will be the Rev. Donald Shields. The dates are:
- Trent-Durham: Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul, Uxbridge. Register online by Oct. 12.

Registration open for outreach conference
The annual Outreach and Advocacy Conference will take place on Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Havergal College, 1451 Avenue Rd., Toronto. This event is an excellent opportunity for learning, sharing and networking among clergy and laypeople passionate about outreach, social justice and creation care. The cost is $30 ($15 for students and low-income participants) and includes lunch. Learn more and register online.

Lay pastoral care teams in the Diocese are invited to attend an all-day overview of lay pastoral care with Dr. Shelley Tidy at St. Philip, Etobicoke, 25 St. Phillips Rd., Toronto, on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Conference focuses on intercultural ministry
Clergy and laity who want to learn about intercultural ministry are invited to Engage Difference, a conference held Nov. 26-30 in Barrie. The ecumenical event, sponsored by the Canadian Council of Churches, will include learning, worship and practical ideas. Participants must register by Oct. 15. Bursaries are available. Applications open for new scholarship fund
The Most Reverend Frederick James Hiltz Scholarship Fund provides funding annually to active clergy, members of religious orders, postulants and laity, including Diocesan Centre and parish staff, to attend courses at St. George’s College in Jerusalem. Scholarships will be made available to individuals throughout the Anglican Church of Canada, but priority will be given to applications from the Diocese of Toronto. Reach Grant deadline approaching

Election resources available soon
A resource highlighting important issues at stake in the Oct. 22 municipal elections will be posted later this week on the Social Justice and Advocacy page. All-candidates meetings offer a chance to learn their views on these issues before the election. Here are some taking place in the Diocese:
- Brampton: Pre-debate social before the Brampton mayoral debate on Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Rose Theatre, 1 Theatre Lane. Register online.
- Cobourg: All-candidates coffee meeting on Sept. 27 from 8-10 a.m. at the Salvation Army Community Church, 59 Ballantine St., hosted by the Northumberland Affordable Housing Committee.
