Faith communities are planning vigils and events in response to the shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Rev. Canon Gary van der Meer, Diocesan Interfaith Officer, has compiled this list of vigil times and prayer resources. We will update it as more information becomes available.
Join us as we come together
March 15, 1:15 p.m.: Rabbi Elyse Goldstein and the Rev. Canon Gary van der Meer will be at the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre, 1168 Bloor St. W., at 1:15 p.m. to offer their support. They are welcoming others to stand at the entrance with them.
March 15, 1:30-5:30 p.m.: The University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Students’ Union is hosting a vigil, 1265 Military Trail, Scarborough.
March 15, 6:30 p.m.: A vigil will be held at Nathan Phillips Square. See Facebook for more details.
March 15, 7:30 p.m.: St. Matthias, Bellwoods will be including prayers for the Muslim community in New Zealand and the victims of the attacks during its weekly Stations of the Cross.
March 15, 8 p.m.: A vigil will be held at the Islamic Information and Dawah Centre, 1168 Bloor St. W., Toronto.
March 22, 1 p.m.: A Ring of Peace is being planned at the Islamic Information and Dawah Centre, 1168 Bloor St. W., to greet worshippers as they arrive for afternoon prayers. All are welcome to attend. This will be a quiet show of support with no political agenda. Any signs should reflect that sentiment.
March 22: The Toronto Board of Rabbis has compiled a list of Rings of Peace happening at mosques across the GTA.
Join us in reaching out in friendship
Consider reaching out to your local Muslim community. Make a phone call offering your support and, if it’s welcomed, follow up with a visit. The Ring of Peace above is an example to explore as you express your prayers and support for your local Muslim sisters and brothers.
The diocesan Interfaith Committee will support your friendships and looks forward to hearing from you as you reach out.

Bishop Peter Carrell of Christchurch issued a statement and call to prayer following the shootings.
God of infinite mercy, we pray for the victims of the Christchurch attacks.
Remember them according to the favour you bear for your people.
Comfort those who mourn and give strength to the injured.
Deliver those whose hearts are hardened by hatred.
Grant to us all your understanding, and your persevering love, for your mercy’s sake. Amen
