Diocese welcomes new social justice consultant
In early April, Elin Goulden started as the Diocese’s new social justice and advocacy consultant. Before taking on this position, she had been working as part-time parish outreach facilitator for York-Credit Valley since 2010. Michael Coren issues video invitation to dinner
Guest speaker Michael Coren invites Anglicans to join him at this year’s Bishop’s Company Dinner on May 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mr. Coren, an author, radio personality and columnist, will share his personal journey to the Anglican Church and what it means for him to be Anglican. The reception and dinner will be hosted at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel. Buy tickets online. Parish hosts events on reconciliation
St. Anne, Toronto is hosting a series of events throughout May related to reconciliation, including a choral concert, a lecture by the Rev. Dr. David Neelands on the history of the Church in Canada and its effect on Indigenous cultures; a KAIROS blanket exercise; an exhibition of art by Indigenous artists; panel discussions on reconciliation; and guest preachers. Course on the diaconate offered
The Rev. Kyn Barker, coordinator of deacons for the Diocese, is offering “Practice of Diaconal Ministry,” a course for credit with the Toronto School of Theology. It is intended for those interested in the diaconate or discerning if they are called to be a deacon. Parish hosts Indigenous cultural competency training
Grace Church, Markham is hosting a day of Indigenous cultural competency training on May 6 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., presented by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres. The training focuses on strengthening professional relationships between urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and clients with trust, friendship and mutual respect. Participants will build a shared understanding of contemporary priorities, the concept of allied relationships, Indigenous holistic healing, and the importance of infusing Indigenous cultural competencies throughout organizational practices through meaningful engagement with the Indigenous community. Church administrators invited to retreat day
A retreat day for people who work in office administrative capacities in places and organizations of worship will be held on June 2 at St. John’s Convent, 233 Cummer Ave., Toronto. Registration and gathering begin at 9 a.m., with the program running from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day is open to all denominations, so tell your colleagues; most organizations allow for professional development days. The cost is $60, which includes facilities, a facilitator, lunch and coffee breaks. Events celebrate gift of water
The Niigaani-gichigami collective, Biidaaban at 40 Oaks, Toronto Urban Native Ministry and St. James Cathedral are organizing a series of events in May related to thanksgiving for and protection of the gift of water. On May 6, there will be a gratitude walk and festival to express gratitude and learn about Niigaani-gichigami (Lake Ontario), beginning with a water ceremony at 10 a.m. at Sherbourne St. at the waterfront, followed by a community barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in St. James Park., with live music, Halal food, artistic activities for all ages and more. All invited to active non-violence training
St. Stephen in-the-Fields, Toronto, is hosting a day of active non-violence training on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This day-long training will be of interest both to those with a principled commitment to non-violence and those who see it as a positive strategy. Topics will include our understanding of the term “nonviolence,” how we process anger and fear, and how to engage constructively in highly charged situations. The event is free, but advance registration would be appreciated, and donations toward lunch are welcome. Contact the Rev. Bishop to speak at prayer breakfast
St. Francis of Assisi at 6945 Meadowvale Town Center Circle, Mississauga, is hosting a Pentecost Prayer Breakfast on June 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. Bishop Jenny Andison will deliver a message on the blessing of the Holy Spirit. All are welcome to come to this morning of good food and inspiring music. Marathon to close streets
The annual GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, May 7 and will result in street closures. Marathon and 10K races begin at 7:30 a.m. and the half marathon begins at 8:30 a.m. Police will be at major intersections to direct traffic, but drivers should expect some delays. The Canadian Christian Meditation Community is inviting Anglican clergy to its biennial national conference on May 26-28 at St. Michael’s College, 50 Joseph St., Toronto. Anglicans invited to join global wave of prayer
From the Feast of the Ascension (May 25) to Pentecost (June 4), Anglicans across the Diocese will participate in an event called Thy Kingdom Come. This campaign, supported by Archbishop Justin Welby, calls on Anglicans to join a global wave of prayer. Participants can pray as an individual, a family, a church or a community of churches. To participate, visit the Thy Kingdom Come global website, sign yourself up at Pledge2Pray, ask others to join you, and start a prayer group in your church to share in prayer. The website also includes ideas and resources to help individuals and communities take part.

St. James Cathedral is inviting applications for an organ scholar to join the music department for one to two years, starting in September. The annual stipend will be $12,000. Parish seeks part-time music director
St. Martin, Bay Ridges in Pickering seeks a flexible, creative and proficient musician for choral and organ leadership who knows and appreciates traditional and modern church music. Knowledge of Anglican liturgy is preferred, and the ability to plan for major festivals throughout the church year will be an asset. With one weekly rehearsal, one Sunday service and monthly meetings with clergy, the position will demand approximately 10 hours per week. The adult choir has 17 SATB voices, and the church has funds to purchase a new electronic organ, for which the new music director’s input will be essential. The applicant should have a music degree, strong playing and conducting skills, leadership and interpersonal skills, and a passion for worship ministry.
