Screening Requirements

Ordained ministry takes place in a variety of contexts, some which are unsupervised, varied and demanding, and where there is a highly visible public role both within and outside the faith community. The ordained person must work with the needy and vulnerable of society in such a manner that trust and the pastoral integrity of the relationship are never compromised. It is essential, therefore, that the Diocese makes every effort to make sure the people who are called to this ministry are able to cope with this responsibility and trust.

To do this, the Diocese of Toronto has implemented a screening process for all postulants in an effort to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults. Each postulant is required to successfully complete the screening process before he/she is accepted for ordination.

This process includes:

  • Signing a Screening Covenant
  • Signing a General Release form
  • Submitting references from a parish support team
  • Submitting references from a medical practitioner
  • Completing a police records check, using the Diocesan approved process
  • Participating in Sexual Misconduct Policy training at the Diocesan level
  • Participating in Responsible Ministry: Screening in Faith Policy training
  • Receiving current statutes related to child sexual abuse
  • Attending a psychosexual education workshop
  • Signing the psychosexual assessment release
  • Participating in 3 psychosexual assessment sessions with one of the approved psychologists
  • Other appropriate assessment procedures as recommended.
