Social Media Sunday 2019

Worship, Diocese, Social, Youth

Ever wanted to live-tweet a sermon? Invite your Facebook friends to church? Find the perfect filter for your favourite view at church? Social Media Sunday is the perfect time to try!

Now an annual tradition in churches around the world, the 2019 edition of Social Media Sunday is scheduled for September 29. Join other Christians as we show how social media can bring God’s love into the digital world, grow relationships, invite friends to see what God is doing in our communities, and help each other feel more comfortable sharing our faith online.

You can participate as a parish or as an individual in ways that make sense for you. You don’t have to join any new social networks! Don’t forget to use the #sms19 hashtag.

Ideas for churches

  • live stream part of the service
  • set up a help desk to answer people’s questions, from the practical (what’s a hashtag? how do I follow the church?) to the philosophical (why should we use social media? how can we use it to share the Gospel?)
  • set up a selfie station or simple photo booth, with props like an oversized version of your logo, your website URL or signs for different groups and ministries
  • have your priest lead the way by announcing #sms19 at the start of the service or taking their own selfie
  • take behind-the-scenes photos of people getting ready for the service
  • bless people’s phones and tablets as tools they use to share God’s love in the world

Ideas for individuals

  • share your thoughts on the sermon, the music, the flowers, the coffee or why you go to church
  • check in at your church on Facebook
  • share a photo or video from any part of your church experience
