Light in the Darkness – Find the Beauty: The Upper Canada Choristers and Cantemos in concert
- Music
The Upper Canada Choristers, conducted by Laurie Evan Fraser, light up the night with their holiday concert, Light in the Darkness – Find the Beauty. It features an engaging mix of Christmas music from over the centuries, in English and Spanish, along with songs for Chanukah and Kwanzaa, and more. Latin ensemble Cantemos serves up songs from South America. Hye Won (Cecilia) Lee is pianist, with Nora Dunn as M.C.
Opening with the 15th century English Boar’s Head Carol, the concert features music by Bach, Haydn, John Rutter, and the premiere of Find the Beauty by Laurie Evan Fraser to a text by Jacqui Atkin. Plus there are Broadway numbers and singalongs.
The choir also celebrates the life of valued chorister Matthew Secaur – who died unexpectedly in hospital this past summer at 49 – by performing his rollicking Christmas sea shanty Memories of Summer.
Tickets are $30. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.
Also streaming live at www.uppercanadachoristers.org and YouTube. Free but donations are welcome.
