Bishop to hold town hall meetings
Bishop Andrew Asbil is holding five town hall meetings in early May to hear from lay people about their hopes, fears and dreams for their parishes and the Diocese. All are invited. Cathedral holding bike drive
St. James Cathedral is seeking used but roadworthy bikes for migrant farm workers in the Beaverton area. Bikes allow the workers to travel to nearby towns, attend church and access community events and services. Bikes can be dropped off during the Bike Drive on May 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. outside the cathedral. There will be refreshments and a short presentation, and the bikes will be blessed and driven to Beaverton. FLAME Toronto (Fellowship Learning for Anglican Men Everywhere) will welcome the Rev. Canon Gary van der Meer as the speaker at its 2019 conference on Sept. 20-22 at Jackson’s Point Conference Centre. Softball league plans another season
The Scarborough Anglican Youth Movement (SAYM) softball league begins its 58th season on May 14. Eight teams, including four from Anglican churches, will play over the summer, culminating in a tournament on Sept. 7. Games are held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at baseball diamonds in Scarborough. The registration fee for each team for the season is $400. Adults and youth over age 13 can join. For more information, contact Martin Walkes at 416-261-0995.
Parish hosts session on evangelism
St. Matthew, Islington is holding an event called “Evangelism for ‘Normal’ People” on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. John Bowen will speak about how we might learn to share our faith in an authentic and compelling way. All are welcome.
Good Friday justice walk turns 40
The ecumenical Good Friday Walk for Justice is celebrating its 40th anniversary. This year’s walk will be held on April 19 at 2 p.m., beginning at Holy Trinity, Trinity Square. The theme will be “For the Sake of the World: 40 Years of Hopeful Persistence.” It will conclude at Holy Trinity with a simple supper. For more details, see the walk’s website.
Tickets on sale for ACW meeting & luncheon
The annual general meeting of the diocesan Anglican Church Women will take place on April 27 at St. Timothy, Agincourt. This year’s theme is “Working with Change” with guest speaker Alexandra Shimo, author of Invisible North: Life Lessons from a Troubled Reserve. Tickets are $35, which includes lunch. Parishes host social justice workshops
Elin Goulden, Social Justice and Advocacy consultant, will be presenting two workshops this month in York-Simcoe on the connection between outreach and advocacy, and how advocacy is part of the Church’s public witness. Both are free and open to neighbouring parishes:

Area lay readers to gather
Trent-Durham is hosting a Lay Readers’ Day on April 13 at St. John, Ida. Bishop Riscylla Shaw will present on Truth and Reconciliation, and Sister Elizabeth Anne, SSJD will present on prayer. Lunch will be provided. The cost is $20 until April 5 or $25 at the door. Register online.
Area hosts second discussion on MAID
York-Credit Valley will host the second part of its discussion on medical assistance in dying on May 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Stephen, Downsview. This session will look at practical implications of MAID for pastors, medical professionals and caregivers. Register online.
Rural parishes meet for conversation
Bishop Riscylla Shaw invites members of rural, multi-point and small-town parishes in Trent-Durham to the Rural Ministry Forum on April 6 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at St. John, Ida. This will be an opportunity for rural parishes to share their needs and hopes and learn from each other. Register online by April 3.

Area hosts beacon event for Thy Kingdom Come

Retreat explores Celtic consciousness
Five Oaks, an interfaith/intercultural spiritual centre, is holding a three-day retreat on Celtic spirituality with John Philip Newell, author and former warden of Iona. Registration open for peacemaking conference
Voices for Peace is a one-day conference on peacemaking steeped in the spirituality of Thomas Merton and Henri Nouwen. It will be held on April 27 at the Henri Nouwen Centre, 95 St. Joseph St., Toronto. Tickets range from $15 to $25. Get more information and register online.
Colleges host history conference
Trinity College and Wycliffe College are co-hosting the Tri-History Conference, a triennial conference of the Episcopal Church, on June 18-21. This year’s theme is “Trauma and Survival in the Contemporary Church: Historical, Archival, and Missional Responses.” Registration is open for either the whole conference or select days. Gathering invites laity to deepen Christian life
The Lay Readers’ Association of the Diocese of Ontario is hosting Summer Fruit for Souls, an annual conference of training, learning and development in Christian ministry open to lay people who wish to deepen and enrich their Christian life and service.
