Save the date: Bishop’s Company Dinner
The Bishop’s Company 58th Annual Dinner will take place on Oct. 18 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel. This year’s speaker is Bishop Andrew Asbil. Tickets will go on sale on July 22 on the Bishop’s Company website. The early bird rate is $175 until Sept. 19, after which the cost will be $200. Staff will do their best to accommodate guests’ requests to sit with particular parishes or friends.

Save the date: Lay Anointers Refresher Day
The annual Lay Anointers Refresher Day for currently licensed lay anointers is scheduled for Sept. 28 at St. James, Orillia. The day provides an opportunity for learning, worship and meeting other anointers. Registration will open shortly and close on Sept. 23. The cost is $30 at the door. Registration open for outreach conference
The annual Outreach & Advocacy Conference will be held on Oct. 19 at Havergal College, with the theme “Grounded and Growing in Christ: Church as a centre of resistance and hope.” Participants will explore how the Church can counter injustice with strategies of resilience and hope. Youth age 11 and older are particularly invited to attend the youth-focused workshop in the morning and youth-friendly options in the afternoon. Register now for youth retreat
Registration is open for the annual ReCharge fall retreat for youth in Grades 6-12, with the theme “How to get closer to Jesus through our prayer life.” It will take place on Sept. 13-15 at Muskoka Woods. The cost is $105 for the first 100 people who register and $149 after that. Sign up online.

Scarborough churches invite teams to scavenger hunt
On Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Anglican churches in York-Scarborough are hosting the first Scarborough Steeplechase scavenger hunt and inviting their friends and neighbours to participate. Contestants will travel to 10 churches, navigating their way through an undisclosed course with only the clues they win at each church to guide them. Anyone, including minors accompanied by a guardian, is invited to register by Sept. 1 with a $25 donation to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund. Liturgy conference explores the Sending
Liturgy Canada presents “God Sends Us in Mission,” the fifth event its Renewing Liturgy series, on Sept. 28 at All Saints Lutheran Anglican Church in Guelph. This conference will help to restore the Sending as an essential act in the Eucharistic celebration. The cost is $35 per person ($25 for students), or $125 for a team of up to five people. Anglican men grow in faith at conference
FLAME Toronto (Fellowship Learning for Anglican Men Everywhere) will welcome the Rev. Canon Gary van der Meer as the speaker at its 2019 conference on Sept. 20-22 at Jackson’s Point Conference Centre. Church musicians encouraged to apply for bursary
Are you looking for ways to develop, support and encourage creative musical and liturgical experimentation with the goal of fostering full liturgical participation by all age groups? Do you have some ideas for exploring ways to enhance worship and musical creativity in your congregation? The Douglas C. Cowling Bursary in Liturgical Music is awarded annually to a part-time musician working in a parish in the Diocese of Toronto to further their own liturgical training or provide creative liturgical enrichment in their ecclesial setting. Parishes reminded to address HR policies
As responsible employers, parishes, regardless of their size, need to be make sure their practices comply with appropriate legislation. Each parish should create an office or staff manual to address a variety of human resources matters. Churchwardens are responsible for setting their parishes’ policies and should check relevant legislation before making policy decisions. The Parish Human Resources Manual explains a number of basic HR issues churchwardens should be familiar with. Ransomware attacks can cause loss of church data
Several churches in the Diocese have been attacked by ransomware, whereby staff open emails that install malware that encrypts files to make them unreadable unless a ransom is paid in BitCoin. This can cause major disruption and data loss, especially if a church uses a local server for shared files. The risk of malware can be significantly reduced by having regular and tested backups of local servers or moving to cloud (online) storage instead of in-house servers.
