To members of Chinese congregations in the Diocese of Toronto.
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
At this time of heightened tension in Hong Kong, the College of Bishops offers their concern and prayers, and calls upon you to do the same in public worship and private devotions. Chinese citizens, many from Hong Kong, comprise a large and important segment of our society, just as you and your churches are integral to the life of the Church. We are one body: “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Corinthians 12: 26).
I call on all members of the Diocese to join us in prayer for Hong Kong. I encourage Anglicans to deepen their knowledge of the issues and the history that led to this crisis, so that understanding may accompany passion. If you have knowledge and insight into the situation, please share them with your friends to help them make informed decisions. An interview with Bishop Patrick Yu, who will provide some background on the situation, will be available on the Diocese’s website, www.toronto.anglican.ca.
While the way forward is not clear, I am all too aware of the ways that the situation can deteriorate. Please pray that all of the parties involved in this confrontation will have the wisdom and courage to seek a peaceful solution.
