Diocesan allotment calculations available to churchwardens and treasurers
Diocesan allotment calculations for 2019 will be mailed today. If you have not received your notification by Oct. 10, contact Claire Wilton at 416-363-6021 (1-800-668-8932) ext. 239 or cwilton@toronto.anglican.ca to receive a copy. Appeals of allotment must be made in writing by Dec. 31 to the attention of Claire Wilton for the Executive Board. Congregations are encouraged to respond earlier so timely arrangements can be made. Appeals must be supported by:

  1. A letter stating the specific amount being appealed and the proposed allotment amount.
  2. Reasons for the appeal.
  3. Audited financial statements for 2017 if the Diocese does not already have them.
  4. Financial statements for the first three quarters of 2018.

Any questions concerning appeals or allotment calculations may be made to Claire Wilton.

T1213 packages mailed for 2019
The 2019 T1213 package for clergy receiving a housing allowance was mailed on Aug. 23. Clergy receiving a housing allowance must file form T1213 and receive written approval from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) before being allowed a reduction of tax at source. If you have not yet submitted your paperwork to the CRA, you should do so immediately to avoid delays. If you receive a housing allowance and have not yet received your T1213 package, contact Claire Wilton at 416-363-6021 (1-800-668-8932) ext. 239 immediately.

The diocesan Clergy Conference will take place on May 27-29, 2019 at Brock University in St. Catharines. More details to come.

Pre-Synod meetings coming up
Episcopal Areas will hold pre-Synod meetings to prepare for the upcoming Regular Session of Synod. Agenda items will include orientation for new Synod members, marriage canon dialogue and elections for Diocesan Council. The dates are:

Workshop explores medical assistance in dying
A workshop on medical assistance in dying will be held on Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist, 99 Brock St., Peterborough. Participants will enter into conversation with the Rev. Canon Douglas Graydon, coordinator of Chaplaincy Services, and the Rev. Margaret Johnston-Jones to explore the pastoral, moral and theological questions surrounding this issue. Lunch will be provided. Register online.

Last chance to register for outreach conference
The annual Outreach and Advocacy Conference is coming up on Oct. 27, and spots are filling up fast. This is an excellent opportunity to learn, share and network with clergy and laypeople passionate about outreach, social justice and creation care. André Lyn, a researcher and advocate on issues of homelessness, poverty and racism, will give the keynote address. The cost is $30 ($15 for students and low-income participants). Registration will close on Oct. 14. Learn more and register online.

Parish offers lay pastoral visiting course
A lay pastoral visiting course is being offered on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Church, 79 Victoria St., Aurora. It will focus on the ministry of one lay person reaching out in Jesus’ name to another, with ordinary skills used in daily life: listening, communicating, showing love and concern, sharing laughter and tears, and understanding hurts and disappointments. Youth invited to explore their faith
Interface, the Diocese’s annual youth social justice event, is coming up on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Clement, Eglinton, 70 St. Clements Ave., Toronto. Open to youth age 13-18 and their leaders, Interface is an interactive day of empowering youth to live out their faith in their communities. This year’s theme is homelessness. Register now for children’s ministry conference
Registration is open for the Toronto Children’s Ministry Conference, a gathering of parents, volunteers, ministry leaders and anyone with a passion for ministering to children. It will take place on Nov. 3 at Wycliffe College, 5 Hoskin Ave., Toronto. Learn more and register online.

Area holds Christian basics course
Bishop Jenny Andison will lead a Christian basics course in York-Credit Valley on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14 at St. Joseph of Nazareth, 290 Balmoral Dr., Brampton. The evenings are designed for anyone who is spiritually searching or who wants to explore – for the first time or once again – who Jesus was and is. Each gathering will begin with coffee and dessert and include upfront talk and lively discussion. Register online.

Lay anointers invited to refresher day
The next refresher day for licensed lay anointers will be held on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trinity Church, Aurora. It will include training, worship, social time, workshops and two addresses by guest speaker the Rev. Canon Dr. David Neelands. The cost is $25. Episcopal areas host mental health symposiums
York-Credit Valley and Trent-Durham are each hosting a mental health awareness symposium to help clergy and pastoral care visitors feel more comfortable and competent in ministering to people with mental health concerns. The presenter will be the Rev. Donald Shields. The dates are:

  • Trent-Durham: Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul, Uxbridge. Register online by Oct. 12.
  • York-Credit Valley: Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter, Erindale

Primate launches Heartbeat of the Church initiative
September 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the General Synod. On this milestone, Primate Fred Hiltz is calling Canadian Anglicans to listen to the Church’s heartbeat through conversation circles, joining in 10 months of dialogue, prayer and reflection. The latest AODA Toolbox newsletter sent out by the Ontario Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility includes information on improving accessibility in heritage properties. Read the newsletter online to get practical, low-cost tips to help parishes meet the accessibility needs of their communities.

Election resources available
Communities throughout Ontario will be going to the polls Oct. 22 to elect their municipal and regional governments. These governments make decisions and provide services that have a direct impact on people’s lives, particularly those living in poverty. A resource highlighting important issues at stake is available on the Social Justice and Advocacy page.

Archives display celebrates Archbishop Johnson
A new display about the life and ministry of Archbishop Colin Johnson has been assembled in the display case in the lobby of the Diocesan Centre. It includes photos, books, artifacts, leaflets and newspaper clippings from the diocesan archives and from Archbishop Johnson. It will be up until Christmas.

Parish seeks family ministry leader
St. Paul the Apostle, Rexdale is seeking a children, youth and family ministry leader to help build and oversee a ministry of spiritual formation, fellowship and community outreach with children, youth and young families. Church seeks director of children and youth ministry
Christ Church, Deer Park is seeking a director of children and youth ministry who will accompany younger members of the parish as they develop their life of faith. Staff Changes

Mustafizur Chowdhury has joined the Diocese as senior accountant in the Finance department. He began on Sept. 20.

Elena Nemenova, senior accountant, has retired. Her last day was Sept. 28. We wish her well.

Bishop Andrew Asbil has begun his duties as Coadjutor Bishop as of Oct. 1.
