Provincial government implementing new lease template
As of April 30, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has implemented a standard lease template for all new leases. Landlords of most private residential units – from individual landlords to property management companies – must use the standard lease template for all new leases. Landlord and tenant rights and responsibilities remain the same under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006. For more information, see the Lease Agreement page.

Meet the nominees at town hall gatherings
In preparation for the upcoming Electoral Synod, a series of Meet the Nominees town hall gatherings has been planned to help Anglicans in the Diocese, particularly members of Synod and youth members of Synod, get to know the nominees. The following dates have been set:

  • York-Credit Valley: May 14, 7-9 p.m. at St. John the Baptist, Dixie, 719 Dundas St. E., Mississauga.
  • York-Simcoe: May 15, 7-9 p.m. at St. George, Allandale, 9 Granville St., Barrie.
  • Trent-Durham: May 16, 7-9 p.m. at St. Paul, Lindsay, 43 Russell St. W., Lindsay.
  • York-Scarborough: May 17, 7-9 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto.

Those interested can attend whichever session is most convenient. A bulletin insert for parishes is available in PDF and Word format.

Events celebrate black history
The Black Anglicans Coordinating Committee is holding a gospel concert on May 5 at 6 p.m. at St. George on Yonge, 5350 Yonge St., Toronto, to raise funds for the 25th annual Black History Month celebration in 2020. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children and youth, and free for kids under five. The committee is also hosting a Toronto Black History bus tour on June 2. The Ontario Black History Society will conduct the tour, which will stop at some of the culturally and historically rich sites around Toronto. These events are open to all. Lay pastoral visitors invited to networking event
Those involved in lay pastoral visiting are invited to meet, share stories and creatively design future opportunities to network, learn and develop skills at a networking event on May 11-12 at St. John’s Convent, 233 Cummer Ave., Toronto. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Lorraine Runza. The cost is $50 for day participants or $75 for overnight participants. For more details, see the event page or contact the Rev. ACW general meeting focuses on women’s safety
The diocesan Anglican Church Women will hold its 2018 annual general meeting and lunch on May 12 at Christ the King, 475 Rathburn Rd., Toronto. This year’s theme is “Embracing Safety for All Women,” with guest speaker Barbara Gosse, CEO of the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking. The cost is $30 per person. Tickets can be mailed for paid orders received before May 2 (provide a self-addressed stamped envelope) or picked up at the door. All invited to Pentecost breakfast
Archbishop Colin Johnson will be the guest speaker at the annual Pentecost Prayer Breakfast on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi, 6945 Meadowvale Town Centre Circle, Mississauga. All are welcome, particularly those from Mississauga and Brampton parishes. The event will include music, food and a message from Archbishop Johnson. Tickets are $10. Call the Rev. Speaker series considers homelessness
“No Room at the Inn: Homelessness and Hope in Northumberland County” is a three-part speaker series sponsored by the Durham-Northumberland Deanery. It will be held on May 2, May 9 and May 16 at 7 p.m. at St. Mark, Port Hope, 51 King St.. Speakers will include the Rev. Michael Shapcott, deacon and housing activist, on May 2; David Sheffield, community director of the Greenwood Coalition on May 9; and Kristina Nairn, co-chair of Northumberland Affordable Housing, on May 16.

Workshop focuses on local watershed
KAIROS and St. Martin, Bay Ridges are co-hosting a full-day workshop to renew the relationship between Canadians and their local watershed on a path toward reconciled relationships with Indigenous peoples. The event will include outdoor reflection and ceremony and connect participants with the work being done by Indigenous communities to protect local watersheds. It will take place on May 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Martin, Bay Ridges, 1203 St. Martin’s Dr., Pickering. Registration is $15 (with lunch) or $5 (bring your own lunch). Register online.

Vesting clergy for consecration asked to RSVP
Clergy from the Diocese of Toronto who wish to vest (white stole) and process from the John Foote Armoury to Christ’s Church Cathedral as part of the service of consecration for the Rev. Canon Susan Bell must email Canon Alison D’Atri at alison.datri@niagaraanglican.ca by May 2. All other seating is by ticket only, and the cathedral will not be able to accommodate clergy who haven’t indicated their attendance in advance. The service will also be live streamed on the Diocese of Niagara’s social media channels, and details for how to access the stream will be posted at www.niagaraanglican.ca.

National conference considers response to disaster
This year’s National Anglican and Lutheran Worship Conference will focus on helping people of faith respond liturgically, theologically and ritually to natural disaster and disasters of human making. The keynote speaker is the Rev. Dr. Lizette Larson-Miller. It will take place July 16-19 in Victoria, BC. The cost $450, not including accommodations. Registration closes June 15. Provincial election resources available
In preparation for the upcoming provincial election on June 7, the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario has prepared a backgrounder on how to raise issues of housing need, poverty and hunger with candidates. If you would like a non-partisan “Let’s Vote for a Poverty-Free Ontario” sign to post outside your home or church, contact Elin Goulden at egoulden@toronto.anglican.ca to arrange pickup. 

Godly Play workshop offers training
A workshop offering Godly Play core training will be held May 31 to June 2 at St. George on-the-Hill, 4600 Dundas St. W., Toronto. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. A Godly Play Canada certificate of accreditation will be awarded upon completion. The registration fee is $325, which includes meals and refreshments. Register online by May 25.

Applicants sought for music bursary
The Douglas C. Cowling Bursary in Liturgical Music will be awarded to encourage creative musical/liturgical experimentation with the aim of fostering full liturgical participation by all age groups of the people of God. It will be awarded annually in the anticipated amount of $5,000 to part-time musicians currently working within a parish in the diocese to further the musician’s own liturgical training or to provide creative liturgical enrichment in the musician’s ecclesial setting. Donations to the bursary fund are being accepted through the Anglican Diocese of Toronto Foundation.

Foundation seeks treasurer
The Anglican Diocese of Toronto Foundation is looking for a new treasurer based in the Greater Toronto Area to serve on its volunteer board of directors for at least a three-year term. The treasurer will provide leadership and direction on both the financial and wider objectives of the Foundation. The minimum commitment is to participate in eight meetings each year, with additional preparation outside of regular meetings. The treasurer will also meet with the assistant treasurer (staff support) and board chair when required. For more details, see the job description. Part-time custodian wanted
The Church of the Nativity, Malvern is seeking a part-time custodian to oversee events held in the church hall when it is rented out. Parish seeks Vacation Bible Camp leaders
St. Paul on-the-Hill, Pickering is looking for students in Grade 7 and up to be volunteer leaders for its Vacation Bible Camp. This is a competitive position, and there are a limited number of spots. The application deadline is June 3, and interviews will be scheduled in early June. Training will take place July 9-12, and the camp runs from July 16-20. Leaders will get community service hours for their participation. For more details, see the application package.

St. Cuthbert, Leaside is seeking a full-time sexton (caretaker) starting June 25. The position will be 40 hours per week, with a salary range of $34,000-$36,000 per year. The Canadian Council of Churches is seeking a treasurer for a three-year term beginning in May. The current treasurer commits two half days a month, or up to six days a month in extraordinary circumstances. There are also several meetings per year.
