New conference explores disciple-making and evangelism
Registration is open for Discipulus’18, a new conference sponsored by the Diocese of Toronto and the Institute of Evangelism focusing on how churches can make disciples in their own communities w­ho will be energized to share their faith with others. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Joan DeVries, a pastor in the Christian Reformed Church with practical experience as a liturgist, writer and teacher. The conference will take place Oct. 18-19 at St. Paul, Bloor Street, 227 Bloor St. E., Toronto. The cost is $200 until July 31 or $250 after July 31 ($200 for theological students and postulants). Workshop focuses on telling scripture by heart
The Rev. Sheilagh Ashworth and the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Green invite clergy and lay readers in York-Simcoe to attend a workshop in learning and telling scripture by heart, and how this ministry fits within the Anglican tradition. It will be held on May 30 from 1-3 p.m. at Christ Church, 292 Kettleby Rd., Kettleby. For more details, email or

Festival celebrates the gift of water
St. James Cathedral, the Niigaani-gichigami Collective and Toronto Urban Native Ministry are holding the Niigaani-gichigami Water Festival in May and June, a series of events intended to explore how we live on the water and build a right relationship with the waters in our region. The festival will bring together diverse communities for celebration of the gift of water, lament, learning and community-building through ceremony and song. Register now for children’s ministry conference
The Toronto Children’s Ministry Conference will take place on Nov. 3 at Wycliffe College, bringing together people who are dedicated to the spiritual growth of children. Workshops will be led by leaders and experts in the field, exploring topics such as discipleship, curriculum and resources, leadership and management, spirituality, and evangelism. Meet the nominees at town hall gatherings
In preparation for the upcoming Electoral Synod, a series of Meet the Nominees town hall gatherings has been planned to help Anglicans in the Diocese, particularly members of Synod and youth members of Synod, get to know the nominees. The following dates have been set:

  • York-Simcoe: May 15, 7-9 p.m. at St. George, Allandale, 9 Granville St., Barrie.
  • Trent-Durham: May 16, 7-9 p.m. at St. Paul, Lindsay, 43 Russell St. W., Lindsay.
  • York-Scarborough: May 17, 7-9 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, 65 Church St., Toronto.

Those interested can attend whichever session is most convenient. A bulletin insert for parishes is available in PDF and Word format.

All invited to Pentecost breakfast
Archbishop Colin Johnson will be the guest speaker at the annual Pentecost Prayer Breakfast on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi, 6945 Meadowvale Town Centre Circle, Mississauga. All are welcome, particularly those from Mississauga and Brampton parishes. The event will include music, food and a message from Archbishop Johnson. Tickets are $10. Call the Rev. National conference explores response to disaster
This year’s National Anglican and Lutheran Worship Conference will focus on helping people of faith respond liturgically, theologically and ritually to natural disaster and disasters of human making. The keynote speaker is the Rev. Dr. Lizette Larson-Miller. It will take place July 16-19 in Victoria, BC. The cost $450, not including accommodations. Registration closes June 15. Webinar considers church communications
The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada is hosting a free webinar on May 17 at 12 p.m. exploring how churches can communicate effectively. Bill Fledderus, senior editor of Faith Today, and Patricia Paddey, communications director at Wycliffe College, will host a practical, tip-filled session and field questions live to help participants with communications challenges in their churches or ministries. Godly Play workshop offers training
A workshop offering Godly Play core training will be held May 31 to June 2 at St. George on-the-Hill, 4600 Dundas St. W., Toronto. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. A Godly Play Canada certificate of accreditation will be awarded upon completion. The registration fee is $325, which includes meals and refreshments. Register online by May 25.


Provincial election resources available
The provincial election campaign gives Anglicans the opportunity to talk about the kind of society we want to help build in Ontario. The Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario has put together non-partisan resources, including social media messages and a bulletin insert with information on poverty and housing in Ontario and suggested questions for candidates. Learn more at

Parishes asked to complete outreach survey
Every parish will receive an email this week with a link to the 2018 Parish Outreach Survey. This survey includes questions about parish outreach and advocacy activities, parish greening and how the diocesan Social Justice & Advocacy Committee can best help parishes in these efforts. It will take 5-10 minutes and may be completed by the incumbent or another person best equipped to answer the questions. Parishes are asked to complete the survey by June 4.

Foundation seeks treasurer
The Anglican Diocese of Toronto Foundation is looking for a new treasurer based in the Greater Toronto Area to serve on its volunteer board of directors for at least a three-year term. The treasurer will provide leadership and direction on both the financial and wider objectives of the Foundation. The minimum commitment is to participate in eight meetings each year, with additional preparation outside of regular meetings. The treasurer will also meet with the assistant treasurer (staff support) and board chair when required. For more details, see the job description. Convent seeks seasonal landscape assistant
St. John’s Convent is seeking a someone to assist in the general landscaping needs of its grounds, such as cutting grass, raking, planting, and preparing and maintaining flower beds. Applicants must be high school, college or university students age 15-30 who were registered as full-time students during the last academic year and intend to return to full-time studies in the next academic year. Organist and choir director wanted
St. Paul the Apostle, Rexdale is seeking a part-time director of music and organist to lead Sunday worship and music ministry and to lead the parish choir in a wide repertoire of hymns, service music and anthems. The successful applicant will enjoy teaching and help develop the musical skills of the choir in a positive and encouraging environment. The organ is a two-manual electronic Allen organ. The commitment will require slightly more hours at Christmas and Easter and fewer hours through the summer months. Availability to play at weddings and funerals would be an asset. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications according to RCCO guidelines. Parish seeks Vacation Bible Camp leaders
St. Paul on-the-Hill, Pickering is looking for students in Grade 7 and up to be volunteer leaders for its Vacation Bible Camp. This is a competitive position, and there are a limited number of spots. The application deadline is June 3, and interviews will be scheduled in early June. Training will take place July 9-12, and the camp runs from July 16-20.
