2018 Regular Synod

The 158th Regular Session of Synod will be held on November 9, 2018, and November 10, 2018, at the Sheraton Parkway-Toronto North Hotel & Suites in Richmond Hill.

Archbishop Johnson has indicated his desire, and Diocesan Council has concurred, to hold a Regular Session of Synod in November 2018. There will be sufficient agenda items to warrant an extraordinary Regular Session of Synod. These include:

  • Changes to The Constitution and Canons that will be coming forward as part of work being done around Growing in Christ, our strategic plan. “Governance and Decision-Making” is one of the five priority areas, and the Working Group has signaled that preliminary recommendations will be ready for implementation by this time.
  • There may be updates or course corrections related to the Budgets for 2018 and 2019 as a result of implementing Growing in Christ.
  • All Diocesan Synods and Provincial Synods are being asked to “consider” the proposed changes to the Marriage Canon that passed first reading at General Synod in 2016 and will return for second reading at General Synod 2019. In response to this, a strategy is currently being developed. More information will be shared with Members of Synod when the details are finalized.
  • Electing our Members to General Synod closer to the date of General Synod. In the absence of Synod in the fall of 2018, our Members to General Synod would need to be elected this coming fall (2017), almost two years prior to the General Synod meeting. Our past experience has shown that this can be problematic with Lay Member turnover, and we risk running out of Substitute Members to General Synod.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
